Mayor's Bi-Weekly Report

I am pleased to provide the Mayor’s Report for the period of August 16th - 30th, 2010, as follows:

I would first like to extend my appreciation and thanks to members of City Council, Administration and the public for their support during my extended absence from the community while on vacation and leave for family matters.

Meetings/Events:
  • On August 17th and 18th, I attended the 40th Annual Northern Association of Community Councils Conference in Winnipeg. I was pleased to extend greetings on behalf of the City of Thompson during the Opening Ceremonies. I took the opportunity to thank N.A.C.C. President Reg Meade and all the member communities for the on-going positive relationship between the organization and the City of Thompson.
  • On August 24th, I was pleased to have an opportunity to meet and welcome to Thompson, the new S.D.M.L. Superintendent Beverly Hammond. Inspector Ken Poulsen of the R.C.M.P also joined the meeting. I look forward to a continued positive working relationship between the S.D.M.L. and the City of Thompson.
 Upcoming Events:
·         A reminder of the upcoming Annual Health and Leisure Mart at the Thompson Regional Community Centre in September. I encourage residents to visit the event and register for a wide variety of activities for the whole family this coming fall and winter. I am pleased to advise that the City of Thompson will once again be present with members of City Council available. For more details, contact the Recreation office at 677-7952.

Other Notes:
·         The City of Thompson has completed our annual asphalite program with a total of 36 kilometers being treated with the surfacing. This is a substantial increase from the average of 12 kilometers in recent years. Beginning late last week and continuing this week, weather permitting the sweepers will be out removing the excess pebbles from the roads.
·         I have received a number of concerns regarding street lighting in recent weeks and with the days beginning to get shorter, I encourage residents to report light outages to Manitoba Hydro at 1-888-624-9376. I can advise that in speaking with a representative from Manitoba Hydro they will be addressing the matter. I appreciate the efforts of residents to draw attention to this matter, because good lighting is one of the key ingredients to a healthy and safe community.
·         I want to remind all residents to practice safe driving in and around school zones, with special attention to the next few weeks as students return to classes.

Proclamations:
No proclamations at this time.

Closing:
I want to acknowledge and thank Bruce Krentz, Director of Recreation, Parks and Culture for his efforts with the City of Thompson. Bruce is moving to the B.R.H.A., and on behalf of City Council, I want to thank you and wish you all the best in the future.

I welcome any questions or comments with respect to my report. Thank you.

Tim Johnston, Mayor
