Water and Wastewater Systems

Land Drainage

Outfall near City Hall

The City of Thompson's land drainage system is a gravity-fed system, which is not combined with the sanitary sewer system.  Water is collected at the catchbasins, storm sewer service lines, etc., flows through a network of pipes and discharges into natural drains through several outfalls located in the City.

Wastewater Collection

 Riverside Lift Station

The City of Thompson has seven lift stations that are located in various areas of the City.  Four of these lift stations pump to the Sewage Treatment Plant and the other three lift stations pump to the aerated lagoon.

Wastewater Treatment

City of ThompsonSewage Treatment Plant

The Sewage Treatment Plant is located on Nelson Road at the far north end.  It is a primary treatment facility, which treats approximately two-thirds of the wastewater that is generated by the City of Thompson.  The remaining one-third of the wastewater that is generated is treated at the Sewage Lagoon.

At the Sewage Treatment Plant, sewage is pumped into two rectangular settling tanks from the Nelson Road and Riverside Lift Stations.  The effluent from the settling tanks is discharged into the Burntwood River, while the raw sludge from the settling tanks is pumped to the digester tanks for stabilization.   A vacuum coil filter then dewaters the sludge from the digester tanks, and the dewatered sludge is hauled to the landfill site for final disposal.  Supernatant from the digester tanks and the filtrate from the vacuum filter are returned to the primary settling tanks and the process is repeated.

City of ThompsonSewage Lagoon

The Sewage Lagoon is located south of Seal Road on the access road to the Fire College.  It is a single cell aerated lagoon, which treats approximately one-third of the wastewater that is generated by the City of Thompson.  The remaining two-thirds of the wastewater that is generated is treated at the Sewage Treatment Plant.

The aerated lagoon is equipped with an Aero-Hydraulics aeration system.  Seventy-two mixing units provide aeration to the front two-thirds of the lagoon.  Settling occurs in the final one-third of the lagoon, after which the treated effluent is disinfected using chlorine gas in a chlorine contact chamber.  The effluent then overflows through a high level overflow pipe and discharges to a nearby natural drain.
