Setting Lake Cottage Association

SLCA 2005 Highlights

April 2005

Highlights from The Pres . . .

1.      Continued lobbying from some cottagers for a relaxed set of rules for back-tier development, combined with a proposed commercial development in our association catchment area, as well as a proposal for a recreation facility created some concerns regarding our purpose as an organization and questions regarding the extent of our jurisdiction.

The Executive felt that it was necessary to examine possible legal and organizational changes that could empower the Association to respond more effectively to these matters. We found that the Association has very limited options. Other than the rights we have now which include consultation on back-tier development and periodic consultation on commercial matters, we have nothing more than the right to lobby on our behalf.

We found that changes to the Associations stance on back-tier development would only create more problems than it would

solve. Therefore, we will not change our approach to this topic. We have proposed additions to our operating practices to reflect a code of conduct. (Refer to Notice of Motion on page 4)

2.      The Executive looked for an economic means to increase communication with members and found an answer through the Northern eBiz Centre. The SLCA website will be launched at the annual meeting in May. It will be accessible through the Business Directory on the City of Thompson Website www.thompson.ca

3.      This fall I became sick with cancer. I was not sure how things would work out. The association required full dedication from an active healthy president. In order to resolve this problem the executive elected Rod Haskins as vice president. Then he was appointed as interim president while I was away. I thank Rod for a job well done during my absence.
